How Climate Change is Affecting the Craft Beer Industry

Image
After reading,  'These Storms Are Just Crazy': Craft Beer Brewers Feel Effects Of Climate Change , on Huffpost, it is apparent that climate is extremely important to the craft beer industry. Beer relies on water, hops, and grains. While quality water, hops, and grains rely on a good climate. Flooding, droughts, pests, and other natural events that occur from climate can have direct impacts on the craft beer industry. In 2011, Hurricane Irene almost ended one of Vermont's best breweries, Alchemist Beer. Known around New England for their infamous Heady Topper, Alchemist was almost forced to close their doors from the damage of Hurricane Irene. Their solution was rebuilding their infrastructure on higher land to avoid seeing this problem in the future. Here is a picture of some of the damage did to Vermont: As for hops, the U.S have already dealt with multiple hop shortages. Brewers are paying extra to be first in line for hop deliveries to avoid not receiving t...

The Best Beer Pairings for your Turkey Day Favorites

Image
Thanksgiving has creeped up on us, shockingly  being only  2 days away.  I'm sure we'll all have to stop by the grocery store for last minute necessitates to make a killer turkey day - just make sure you don't get trampled by the hundreds of other people scrambling through Stop and Shop. This is the one day of the year where it's okay to go overboard with side dishes, some of my favorites being: mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing, rolls, gravy, and of course the famous pumpkin pie . Of course not forgetting the star of the dinner, turkey. Forget the wine, I'm here to give you your Thanksgiving beer guide . Even for the ham fans out there, we've got you covered. Traditional turkey : Saison  -  The light body and fruitiness of a Saison will contrast and complement the meats earthiness. Fried turkey : American IPA -  The flavors (specifically in a tropical IPA) help cut the richness of your deep-fried turkey. Ham :   Weizen...

Trillium Opening Winter Beer Garden in Roslindale

Image
Exciting news came out today about Trillium Brewing Company opening a winter beer garden in Roslindale. Now Bostonians have a new winter wonderland where they can enjoy some quality beer. The beer garden will be open five days a week and they will be have rotating draft options. The "Trillium Garden at the Substation" will be located at the Roslindale substation. This past summer, Trillium had a beer garden at the corner of High Street and Atlantic Avenue in Boston. Trillium enjoyed that experience so much, a little cold weather was not going to stop them from opening a winter beer garden. The faculty at Craft Brewniversity is super excited to check this out!

Sam Adams is finally opening a taproom!

Image
BOSTON – For years, the Samuel Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain was one of the top tourist destinations in Boston, with millions of people visiting each year. But, one thing was missing – you couldn’t enjoy a pint of your favorite Samuel Adams beer. They only allowed samples. That has now changed. Last week, Samuel Adams opened its brand-new taproom at its 30 Germania St. brewery. Now visitors can tour the brewery, taste samples and drink full pints or flights of several of their favorite brews. “It’s awesome. It’s a great space,” said Brewery Manager Jennifer Glanville. ” I really designed the space I want to hang out in. I hang out at a lot of taprooms. This has a lot of casual seating, communal tables. Shuffleboard. We’ll have food trucks. We want people to help determine what’s in here.” The taproom is next to the retail store inside the brewery. It opens to the beer garden. The taproom holds up to 80 people comfortably and, when weather allows, the beer garden can seat ...

Battle Road Brew House - Review

Image
Took a pit stop while driving on a Sunday afternoon and found this gem hidden in the small town of Maynard, MA . Many of you might of heard of this brew house, but this was a first for me. I was eager to order a beer once I read they were brewed in house, and to say the least I was not disappointed. The drink I choose was the Midnight Rider Porter (yes, I did order it for the name). The beer was described to have "wisps of campfire smoke and coffeehouse aromatics" as well as "a touch of molasses and a hearty amount of flaked maize". The flavor was rich and dark with hints of espresso, making it a coffee lovers dream. Not to mention the southern style BBQ was killer, and a perfect combo for any craft beer (considering they have 9 in house brewed beer to offer , there's an option for everyone). Maynard's a bit away from Boston, but Battle Road is worth the day trip for beer enthusiasts. A list of their beer menu:  https://m.opentable.com/restaurant...

The Beer Broad Went to Burlington Breweries

Image
Craft Brewniversity's dear friend, Julia, aka the_beer_broad on Instagram, visited the breweries in the beautiful city of Burlington, Vermont. Since we both share a love for beer, she was willing to share her experience and we want to share that with you. For amazing pictures and opinions of beer, go follow @the_beer_broad on Instagram by clicking  here . Lets see what she had to say about some Burlington Breweries... Switchback Brewing Co. Flagship: Switchback Ale 5%. Like Burlington itself, the beer is different from what you might expect—unfiltered, naturally carbonated, bottle conditioned. My pick :  The connector IPA (named after the world's largest file cabinet)  We stumbled upon Switchback because we were actually in the area to see how big the file cabinet actually was, and when we were leaving we saw a sign for the brewery and decided we have to go.  Theme: Burlington and mountain living.  The word Switchback refers ...

Man locked in store's beer cooler stays, drinks all night

Image
In a classic case of 'you would though, wouldn't you?' a man who was stuck in a beer cooler decided to get pissed, then got arrested. Jeremy Van Ert became trapped after he wandered into the cooler, only for the door to automatically lock behind him as the Kwik Stop store doesn't sell alcohol after midnight. When I say he was stuck, the door of the cooler was made of glass and the store is open 24 hours a day, so I guess technically he could have tried to signal for help at any point. But who wants to spend the night in without alcohol after they refuse to serve you? "The subject found himself locked in the beer cooler, knew that Kwik Trip would not sell him any beer, so he decided to remain in the beer cooler," said Marshfield Police Chief Rick Gramza. "A customer came by the beer cooler at about 6 a.m. and saw him inside." According to the police report, Van Ert's sesh saw him drink an 18 ounce bottle of Icehouse Beer and thr...
